Refuse To Contribute

As a subset of my path to health, a good chunk of my journey as a vegan has featured a certain sense of principlism. When both my mental and physical condition deteriorated throughout 2015, I no longer adhered to my diet for the reason I was inclined to make the switch since witnessing the evil of the meat and dairy industries: because I never, ever want another being to suffer at my own hand, whether directly or indirectly. I still loved animals of course; I just wasn’t in it anymore. I half-hardheartedly went through the motions, and only explicit examples of cruelty could snap me out of the detachment I assumed toward all facets of my life. Throughout my treatment with homeopathy, I realized I valued the lives of everyone but myself; I could feel so much when I witnessed another suffering, yet I could not feel the impact of my own potential death. As I have begun to remember who I am, how driven I am by my sentimentality, I am reminded of the compassion that defines my morality for all living beings, including myself. This very compassion is stifled in the majority, unfortunately, as we are guided toward entitlement of possessions considered lesser, our right of passage as the superior race (funny that this word is attached so frequently and harshly to the millennial generation when the earliest eras entitled themselves to sentient beings). We have de-animalized creatures driven lower on the totem poll, treating them as property and often insentient in fact, thus justifying the manipulation of their welfare. As a result, we are desensitized to the horror of their massacre.

As a being that would rather die than witness the spark retreat from the eyes of another soul as they withdraw from consciousness, I refuse to contribute to the massacre of those considered lesser in order to further an evil agenda.

As a being that does not believe in possession- that is, claiming the lives of other creatures as her own, thus entitling herself to the management of their existence- I refuse to contribute to the massacre of those considered lesser in order to further an evil agenda.

As a being that would rather build others up than dominate them, glorifying violence as the right of the intellectually superior to obtain their desires, I refuse to contribute to the massacre of those considered lesser in order to further an evil agenda.

As a being that loves her “pets” as much as she loves creatures that graze farmland, I refuse to contribute to the massacre of those considered lesser in order to further an evil agenda.

As a being that recognizes all life as equitable in value, I refuse to contribute to the massacre of those considered lesser in order to further an evil agenda.
